    The boys professed to wanting to recreate the electricity that comes from playing live, a quality they’ve certainly captured over these 10 cuts. Driving guitar strums and lightning-paced drums break into rousing choruses on ‘S Four’ and ‘Legs & Arms’, with emotion-laden wails from frontman Roman Rappak. Proving that the recorder and harpsichord marry happily with juddering synth sounds comes ‘302 Watch Towers’, while ‘Got Well Soon’ (video below) unfolds like a motorbike revving its engine.

    Described on their own website as “electronic rock,” Infinite Summer does see NZCA Lines move towards a slightly more ambitious rock sound; the guitar solo (of sorts) on “How Long Does It Take,” for example, is one indicator as to why guitarist Charlotte Hatherley (yes, from Ash and Bat For Lashes) and Hot Chip drummer Sarah Jones have been added to the live line-up.

From 936’s spaceman dub to 2014’s more synth leaning, Cosmic Logic the band have never been afraid to experiment with heavy heavy sounds. This makes The Fifth State Of Consciousness all the more surreal. The album is almost a homage to the group’s past, rather than a bold leap into the unknown.

     Ester Brohus has always been herself. Choosing country music is in itself a unique sight in Denmark, although not as much as when she started. It is archetypal American music, often sentimental, banal and with the big emotions of longing and loneliness in swing. Many Americans love it, and indeed there are also many musicians and singers who do it insanely well. Country is a huge industry, very commercial, but it is not to everyone's taste.

HYPNOGOGIC POP

     A former Haunted Graffiti member, Gary War (aka Greg Dalton) often gets shortsighted alongside his peers, Ariel Pink and John Maus. Arguably, the most experimental of that crowd, War tends to resist the nostalgic impulse in Pink’s music and precludes the pop chops of Maus. On Jared’s Lot, this sensibility is accentuated even further than in the past. Here, he hides razor-sharp angularity under a fog of reverb and contorts a melody’s crooked gait into an impenetrable Fibonacci sequence of retro-futurist arpeggio bedlam.
