27.12.2025-EMILY JANE WHITE Ode To Sentience (Talitres,2010)

 

NEOFOLK

   After her debut E.P. and first album, White seemed firmly pegged as a gloomy, miserabilist artist, a champion of the sad song.  But Ode To Sentience, while it’s far from being a radical departure, has plenty of surprises. There are minor chords and mourning string arrangements throughout, but there’s pedal steel on “Broken Words”, a light breath of fresh air. There’s tight composition and clever pop songwriting in “The Black Oak”, and bright drums lead the way on “The Cliff”, another song with a country tilt. In a song about someone thinking about taking their life, White summons Townes Van Zandt, or maybe he just reminds her of herself: “It’s as if you were waiting around to die, and you found something to mend the frayed corners of your mind.”

   At Swim is an incredibly soft record. Contrasting our harsh world, all of the album's instruments are played gently and with care, while Hannigan's hushed and raspy voice is as commanding as ever as she exudes a quiet confidence. On "Anahorish," a gorgeous a cappella interpretation of Seamus Heaney's poem, we hear the full powers of Hannigan's voice, but she dazzles all the same on denser tracks like "We, the Drowned" or "Barton," which is flecked with a muted electronic beat. Her voice punctures the thick layers of instrumentation with ease.

Performing and recording together since 2007, Balmorhea has often explored the auditory world of subtle minimalism and restraint, and they continue to do so on their latest, "Pendant World", their second release on the Deutsche Grammophon label.

   Even if Me The Tiger can only be classified as synth pop (how would you describe it otherwise?), it’s more than that, as this trio is looking for a very specific sound that sometimes has an apocalyptic feel. The best example is the opening song Ariana, in which singer Gabriella Åström shouts the words: Cuz We Are Dead!

   These three Swedes might have some Depeche Mode albums in their collections, but they surely haven’t used them to come up with their own tunes, which that graces them.

   Up-and-coming singer-songwriter Jensen McRae is one of the most exciting and prominent black voices in the folk-pop scene. McRae is from a black-Jewish background, and explores themes of race and gender in her music. Comparable to the likes of Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell, her works explore the complexities of youth, womanhood and hypersensitivity. Her haunting voice and cathartic lyricism creates a saccharine listening experience.
