   “Domination” proves that Monolith is not exactly repeating himself. This is a project with a great sound, which is in constant evolution. I was totally convinced by the mix between techno ‘Berliner’ influences and damaging industrial treatments. There are several cool songs on his album, but I really have a preference for “The Bell Witch” and “Bitter Years”.

   Mike Diaz is an American musician who continues with his project called Millionyoung. Like other well-known names in the music scene such as Teen Daze, Toro Y Moi, and Washed Out, Millionyoung also started out in the Chillwave genre. With his discography growing, the musician brought new airs to his sound, encompassing other genres and expanding his electronic music. A good example of this was his previous album, 'Variable' (2013). Millionyoung appropriates current electronic music, and much of his sound encompasses Downtempo and Chillwave itself; however, in the ten tracks, we can perceive that the musician also doesn't forget to include echoes of Disco Music and 80s influences (Art Of Noise, Orange Juice, and New Order are some examples). An album that offers both danceable moments to enjoy a night with friends ('Concept Of Time') or a more relaxing mood, creating a very introspective soundscape ('What To Do').

23.11.2025-ANITA TIJOUX Kaos (Oveja Negra,2007)

 

HIP HOP

   Difficulties with her record label during the recording of her first solo album meant that it never was released to the public, so Tijoux changed labels and started over. Kaos saw Tijoux take advantage of her artistic freedom, editing and experimenting with more upbeat, poppier styles, like “Gol”, and also enter into slower songs, such as “A Veces”, featuring fellow Chilean rapper Hortodoj.

INDIE FOLK

   While previous releases relied on traditional songs to lend a weight to their art, Bonny Light Horseman have become a primordial, acoustic force of nature on Keep Me on Your Mind/See You Free. Most of these songs sound like they were written over a century ago, and performed with instruments just as storied. The only sounds that don't murmur with age are the clear, full-throated voices of Anais Mitchell and Eric D. Johnson. With a few folk-pop dabbling exceptions, the trio maintain the timeless, fireside publican house atmosphere for the entire runtime.

ALTERNATIVE ROCK

   The French duo of Florent Lyonnet and Antoine Hilaire recorded their second album in Los Angeles right on Ventura Boulevard, which explains both the title and the sunshine sound. From the very first note, it's the typical Jamaica sound – but that doesn't mean reggae; instead, there are melodic singalongs and effect-laden guitars with a few synths and sound effects thrown in.

   Emily Wells makes a dramatic statement on This World is Too___For You. The musician, composer, and producer has clearly hit her stride on her sixth release, a masterful, epic collection of songs. A striking blend of orchestral and goth music, this album is a slow-burner that is equal parts heart wrenching, sexy, and meditative. Wells follows in the footsteps of legends like Björk and Annie Lennox with ethereal, minimalist tracks including “Remind Me To Remember” and the classically tinged “Stay Up.” Album standout “Come On Doom, Let’s Party” shows Wells at her best—haunting, emotional, and suspenseful.

   Country music has become a free-trade zone: Witness “Emmylou,” a love song about Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, sung by two Swedes with old-school sibling-act harmonies. Johanna and Klara Söderberg are indie rockers at heart: They recorded this set in Omaha with Bright Eyes’ Mike Mogis; Conor Oberst does his own Gram Parsons turn on “King of the World.” The songs shuffle styles, but the voices transcend genre distinctions.

   Love in Constant Spectacle features all of Weaver's strengths and none of her (very few) weaknesses. There's a kind of magical play here that conceals the emotional weight the album continuously heaves skyward, any evidence of the effort smoothed out in the subtitles.

   Hulda Huima has completed her best album, which is called “Ilma”. It is a follow-up to the album “Maa” released in 2019. The album crystallizes all of Hulda Huima’s best aspects: simply gorgeous folk rock songs, beautiful melancholy, uncomplicated expression, poetic stories about nature and the rough and stylish playing of the band Hitaat sekunnit. A new angle is brought to the album by Samuli Tanner’s ingenious production, which combines electronic soundscapes with organic band sound.

   It has been eight years since Mountain Man released their debut LP Made the Harbor — a timeless barebones record — and this sophomore album is of the same vein. The majority of the songs are sung a cappella, and what little instrumentation is present is softly played on acoustic guitar. In either case, listeners are able to revel in the intricacies of Mountain Man's entwined voices. On "AGT," for example, Meath, Sauser-Monnig and Sarlé tumble easily up and down the hills and valleys of their melody, while later, the trio's hushed humming in "Whale Song" feels like it's a mimicry of a whale's low frequency vocalizations.

SHOEGAZE

   Asobi Seksu are consis-tently literal with their album titles. For 2009's Hush, the duo of James Hanna and Yuki Chikudate toned down the guitar overdrive to allow their crystalline songcraft to glimmer. And Fluorescence, their fourth studio album, has an overwhelming brightness -- neon synth squiggles illuminate the shoegaze surge of "Counterglow," while epic centerpiece "Leave the Drummer Out There" is spotlighted by said instrument's crisp martial beat. But amid the air-raid guitars of the anthemic "Trails," Chikudate finds space to soar from a hushed coo to an outright howl: "Please, don't leave me here with nothing."

01.11.2025-SUSANNE SUNDFOR The Silicone Veil (EMI,2012)

 

FOLKTRONICA

   Carefully orchestrated, beautiful sung, and imaginatively written; I hadn't even heard the name Susanne Sundfør a week before I first heard this album, and yet The Silicone Veil falls so comfortably into my own tastes that I feel as if I've known about her for years. With a little more exposure, she has the potential to be a star.
