Scottish musician Hannah Read now lives in Brooklyn but on her album Way Out I’ll Wander she keeps her sounds intimate and rootsy rather than reflecting the bright lights of the city. Listening to her music you feel like you’re walking in the gloaming, along a moorland path somewhere far from civilisation. The simple black and white cover conveys the stark beauty of the folk music contained within this album.

23.11.2023-STEPKIDS Troubadour (Stones Throw,2013)

The StepKids' sophomore album, Troubadour, is a kaleidoscope of stimulating sounds paired with lyrics that often feel too affected to be taken seriously. Part of the group's appeal is that they sound like musician friends gigging at a hipster lounge in their spare time, just for kicks. But the StepKids have a tendency to undermine emotion by crafting peculiar lyrics that weaken the song's message (i.e., "Symmetry"). They successfully channel Steely Dan eccentric-ness on "The Lottery" and "Moving Pictures," with both encapsulating the band's jazzy funkiness and pleasurable, back-in-the-day grooves. However, it's as if they're itching to reveal all their inspirations on this one album, whether it calls for them or not. "Bitter Bug" and "Insecure Troubadour" find them squeezing influences into Troubadour that make it swing wildly, like a kicked pendulum.

For the uninitiated, Elephant Revival is a self-described Transcendental Folk Quintet band consisting of members: Bonnie Paine (vocals, washboard, stomp board, djembe, and musical saw), Charlie Rose (vocals, pedal steel, banjo, cello, trumpet, trombone), Dango Rose (double-bass, mandolin, banjo, vocals), Daniel Rodriguez (acoustic guitar, electric banjo/guitar vocals), Bridget Law (fiddle and vocals). Their music expresses many influences, including Folk, Celtic Traditional, Americana and Bluegrass to create a kind of Rootsicana - Folkadelic Transcendental musical experience.

This debut effort from Marie Merlet and Matthieu Beck is like a long bath with a mug of herbal brew, a soothing and rejuvenating record that sounds a bit like Happy Meals in a woolly jumper while extolling the virtues of some quality solo time (Time to Get Alone) and a good night’s sleep (One Last Drink). The pair’s lullaby vocals and chirpy keyboard presets project a naive playfulness that belies understated and mature arrangements.

PSYCHEDELIC POP

‘In A Poem Unlimited’ is not only the Illinois-born artist’s most accessible material to date, it’s also her greatest collection of songs by some margin and the best you’re likely to hear in 2018. Fuelled by political angst and social inequality, it feels like a landmark and although aided by a plethora of exceptional musicians, it’s difficult to envisage anyone else but Remy conceiving such a record. This is exemplary, political pop music executed to near perfection.
