     Sydney based artist Jonti has released his long awaited album, “Tokorats”. After a 5 year hiatus he has returned to us with a beautiful body of work. It is incredibly conceptual, well thought out, offers a diverse array of sounds and moods and collaborates beautifully with Sampa The Great, Hodgy and Midnight Mutants. The whole 15 tracks tie together almost in unison, taking you on a journey of emotions and strong feels.

      With the help of producer pal Fryars, they’ve taken the synths to 11, Miles Haughton’s vocals taking a back seat almost at times. At its best, there’s plenty of Friendly Fires’ Hawaiian shirt-wearing party-starting: ‘You Are Real’ is a beast, while ‘Never Ending Story’ a 90s house-aping stomp of a track.

     Dead Confederate play exactly the kind of music a band called Dead Confederate should — sluggish, sorrowful, searing, and Southern in virtually all the right ways. The Georgia quintet’s debut may appeal to My Morning Jacket fans, but songs like “Heavy Petting” and “Start Me Laughing”(which recalls Kurt Cobain at his nastiest) possess more growl than that comparison implies. Then there’s the atmospheric, album-defining “The Rat,” which simmers and soars — and somehow makes the phrase “Stupid human, shit for brains” sound not just sensible, but vaguely significant.

     Canadian girl-boy duo, whose debut is an odd mix of ’80s analogue drum snaps and edgy ’90s synth-pop. Opener ‘Nap On The Bow’ is like a weird consummation between Olive’s ‘You’re Not Alone’ and the classic cheese of ‘I Can’t Wait’ by Nu Schooz. And, largely down to Sarah Ruba’s versatile voice, the punchy electro of ‘Teen Need’ and opulent melodrama of ‘The Ballad’ ensures ‘New Look’ is pleasingly playable.

     Much of Screaming Females’ appeal, and even their greatness, is their esotericism – in particular the impenetrable world of Marissa Paternoster’s hermetic guitar, lyrical poetry and visual art.
