Castaway casts a plumb line line back to the Shangri-Las and Shirelles through Slowdive and a little of the cracked glamour of Hole; taps into Best Coast’s early promise; the Vivian Girls, even. It’s a very LA record, having an instinctive, unforced glamour, but on many tracks you can sense the desert at its back, whispering with a lightly acid alt.country.

One of the most celebrated talents on the Nouvelle Chansons scene, Emily Loizeau followed up her Prix Constantin-winning sophomore album, Pays Sauvage, with another collection of poetic and melancholic folk songs entitled Mothers & Tygers. Recorded at her home in Ardeche, it includes the single "Vole le Chagrin des Oiseaux" and tracks penned by French chanteuse Camille ("Marry Gus and Celia") and Herman Düne's David-Ivar Herman Düne ("The Angel").

Perhaps the most relevant question asked by Jimmy LaFave on Cimarron Manifesto is: “Whatever happened to Johnny B. Goode?” Except for a couple of tracks, this is LaFave’s quietest, prettiest, most sensitive record — and that’s saying a lot, as LaFave has done a lot of quiet, sensitive and pretty songs. For a guy who occasionally used to play it pretty hard (get the ragged but right Trail to hear him in rock-out mode), LaFave takes the soft shoulder here with a beautiful but decidedly unmuscular handful of originals and three covers.

Jodie Marie's debut album, is suffused with the sublime folk-jazz strains of late-Sixties singer-songwriters. With her delivery tacking impressively between sweet and smoky, "On the Road" recalls what happened when the Kind of Blue influence hit the likes of Tim Buckley and Tim Hardin, while "Single Blank Canvas" could be a Fred Neil outtake. Elsewhere, the subtly elegant soul vocal tints applied to the charming hippie fantasies of "Dandelion Wishes" and "Like a Runaway" powerfully evoke the sound and spirit of Jackie DeShannon.

The album retains Milagres' knack for the uncomfortably honest and, as a result, it still has a darkness to it. Where the light comes in is in straddling the borderline between that darkness and bright pop, utilising synths, samples and distorted guitars to create a real passion pit of mixed emotions.

Little Wind is the perfect example of that creative genius that marches on to its very own drummer, hand claps, and glockenspiel. The music and vocal skills will draw the obvious comparisons of Leslie Feist and Joanna Newsom, sans harp. But Smith & Sleeps do a fairly good job of keeping it fresh, emerging into their own sunlight.

Delicate Steve is the stage name of Steve Marion, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based multi-instrumentalist whose album, “This Is Steve” (Anti/Epitaph), is an invigorating blast of instrumental rock. Most of the time, his guitar playing is anything but delicate: It stings, shouts, flits and beguiles, often with uninhibited joy. Its energy extends outward; that is, there are no self-indulgent note blizzards or pompous dinosaur stomps. “This Is Steve,” out Friday, is good fuzzy fun.

Neuroplasticity is a tough nut to crack. This is the type of record that you could probably listen to 100 times and find something new and startling, which elevates it far and above many releases of its ilk. While the disc has many different stylistic tones, and is a bit all over the map, it still hangs together remarkably well. Imagine tUnE-yArDs without the dance beats, and the overall picture of Cold Specks’ sound emerges, though her music is certainly darker.

Featuring a grand sound that includes disembodied drums, shimmery synths, cathedral organs, Middle Eastern strings, Lynchian guitar, and her distinctive vocals, it's one of the most genuinely moving pop records of 2015.
