30.01.2023-BOY We Were Here (Gronland,2015)
INDIE POP
We Were Here could rightfully be perceived as a relatively undemanding record. Certainly, these nine luminous songs should not require huge reserves of patience or energy from the listener to fully appreciate. Frankly - I’m glad of that fact. There will always be certain days in life where I need something immediate, catchy and guaranteed to go straight to my head. If I get a euphoric bus ride out of it too - well, that’s a nice little bonus.

29.01.2023.MS MR How Does It Feel (Columbia,2015)
The vocalist/producer team of Lizzy Plapinger and Max Hershenow are back with MS MR’s second full length album How Does It Feel. There was a sense of allure about the duo with the release of their debut through their own blend of dark wave and pop boosted with more novel electronic production sensibilities. To answer the new album’s title though, it doesn’t sound all that different this time around.

The arrangements and production of his new album are based on a relatively conservative approach, the elements of digital creation are tenuous, the emphasis is rather on human performances. So kick back and enjoy the excellent groove emanating from the rhythm section, the silky arrangements for brass, reeds, and strings, and the nice acoustic and electric guitar bridges. And spoiling nothing, Duncan’s superb, fluid, magnetic voice.

27.01.2023-SPLASHH Comfort (Kanine,2013)
PSYCHEDELIC ROCK
Splashh’s debut album, though masked in the tropical hazes, possesses a heartbroken despondency. This is most evident on ‘Green & Blue’, when frontman Sasha Carlson pines “Where have you gone?” over riffs soaked with tear-stained hopelessness. The record’s more familiar cuts don’t escape unscathed either, and ‘All I Wanna Do’ is rich in bittersweet nostalgia, remembering a relationship’s golden days. This is not the carefree record Splashh were expected to make, but it is all the better for its dourness.

26.01.2023-JAGWAR MA Howlin' (Mom+Pop,2013)

Jagwar Ma’s premise is inherently charming, and the best moments here blend that affability with their mass of influences. The rave-pop of “Uncertainty” is Caribou by way of Cut Copy; the deliriously catchy “Man I Need” is Primal Scream with a touch of latter-day Rapture. The pastiche is overpowering at times, reminding you of too many acts plus one, but Jagwar Ma’s happy-go-lucky brashness is irresistible. Mindlessly hummable and pure of vision, Howlin’ sounds just as good coming from your headphones as it does from Marshall stacks.

23.01.2023-GIN WIGMORE Ivory (island Records Australia,2018)
ALTERNATIVE ROCK
Gin has that raw, powerful voice we all know and love, but she is definitely branching out musically with this album. Ivory seems to have more pop undertones than her previous release Blood to Bone. There seems to be some tracks that feel very LA summer, though with her residing in LA, it wouldn’t be surprising that it is influencing her. You can also hear a confidence behind her voice. But tracks like Cabrona, for example, have a very 80’s vibe, so much so that you can’t help but sing-and-dance-a-long to it. Beatnik Trip and Girl Gang are much the same. Then there are more stripped back tracks like Cold Cave which are more acoustic and really push Gin’s voice to the forefront.

22.01.2023-DEAP VALLY Marriage (Cooking Vinyl,2021)
Though the album claims to be a ‘genre-bending experiment’, Marriage stays largely within the comfort zone of both the band’s previous discography, and the rock genre. Nevertheless, the result is promising: a cohesive album that sticks to their roots, and like the cover art, has them dangling their feet over the collaborative waters, testing them first before they dive fully in.

This sophisticated dream-pop offering is a complete dance party in 11 tracks. I Feel Alive is the first album to grace the band’s own imprint Musique TOPS, as well as the first album to feature keyboardist Marta Cikojevic. With the addition of this fourth musician, TOPS leans toward a more retro pop sound than before, the vintage processing of Cikojevic’s keyboard a polished layer to the soft rock progressions of their past.

13.01.2023-JACCO GARDNER Somnium (Excelsior,2018)
There are touches of space rock, krautrock, prog and ambient, yes, but what does that really tell you? If you haven’t actually experienced ‘Levania’’s wiry bass grooves, gorgeous analogue synth arpeggios and eerie Hank Marvin guitar lines, I may as well read you out the instructions for a flat-pack wardrobe for all the good it will do to try to describe it. I’ll tell you this, though: if Radiohead had the balls to release this, we’d be talking about ‘Somnium’ as a classic.

12.01.2023-HALLS Love To Give (No Pain In Pop,2014)
With string sections and organs added to Howard’s palette, many of the songs veer off at increasingly unexpected tangents. The album’s centrepiece ‘Aria’ breaks down altogether before elegantly piecing itself back together, whilst twin closer ‘Body Eraser / Avalanche’ – as the title might suggest – sees the walls fall in altogether, ending the LP in frenzied catharsis.

Comprising two sisters, Taraka and Nimai Larson, who grew up in ashrams, Prince Rama create New Age, psychedelic dance music. The Larsons began writing Xtreme Now, their seventh album, while living on a black metal utopian commune during the summer of 2012. It’s a concept album—which is nothing new for the band—based on the merger of art and extreme sports. If this is beginning to sound pretentious or too far-fetched, welcome to Prince Rama’s world: where reality is checked at the door and fantasy is the only way to make sense of anything.

The idea behind 2 Seater, the new album by American rock band THE BOTS, is exciting. Each of the songs was written by Lei between the ages of 19 and 22, now at 28 he has turned to them again, worked them out and thus dealt with thoughts and ideas from the past musically in an extreme way. The band has moved away from the original punk edge, openly professes to indie pop, you can't deny a retro rock and generally THE BOTS are open in all directions. Guitar and Lei's vocals are in the foreground, the drums accompany everything extremely agile and full of energy.

06.01.2023-SAY LOU LOU Immortelle (A Deux/Cosmos,2018)
‘Immortelle’ is a glorious collection of skewed pop songs that ooze film noir chic. There is sensuality to the arrangements and vocals, but just bubbling underneath an element of danger. Much like the on screen femme fatale, you fall under the songs under their spell, but its only when you realise you’re in too deep, a delicate melody or huge string section stops you in your tracks and you’re back under its control again.
