Canadian electro-high-priestess Claire Boucher did more than anyone this year to stoke the hot romance between R&B and dream pop. A one-woman Kraftwerk who performs with an arsenal of machines and a couple of booty dancers, she’s a true stylistic omnivore, and her breakthrough set uses EDM extremism, medieval chants, sugar-crusted melodies and her own sky-high voice to rethink pop music. See the irresistible Far East chipmunk chants on “Genesis,” or “Skin,” which suggests Florence Welch savoring a postcoital bong.

The opening, lightly pierced synth lead and frozen, programmed drums of “For You” lets you know right off the bat that this isn’t just part two of her debut, The Overture & The Underscore, which stuck mostly to brilliantly underplayed, melancholic rock arrangements. Not that she’s forsaken that aesthetic or anything – the next track, “The Garden’s End,” takes things back to her ethereal pop rock roots with a deeper suggestion of baroque charm – but she’s obviously dedicated to expanding her artistic palette, as opposed to taking the easy way out and merely sticking to the winning formula, which definitely gets the nod of respect from me. Her first single, “[Explain],” is simply moving, with her Joanna-Newsom-without-the-shrill voice gliding over a plodding bassoon, elegant piano, and light strings. Lyrically, she’s mostly interested in moments of success and failure of love between mildly dysfunctional people, dripping sexual tension, and emotionally wounded expression with each syllable. Yes, even for a cold curmudgeon like me, she’s got the goods to win you over in your darkest shadow and brightest days.

Love it or loath it, witch house is here to stay and so is Sidewalks And Skeletons, AKA Bradford's Jake Lee who, on his latest release under the moniker continues to experiment and push the definition of the genre. 'White Light', the follow-up to last year's 'Future Ghosts', incorporates the classic trappings of witch house but pushes beyond them as well and even goes as far to infuse metal elements into some of the songs. It is an album that is set on expanding the palette of its creator and the experimental scope of the genre.

His songs take the ferocity of early rock & roll, add hip-hop-flavored beats, ladle on some feedback – and move on before wearing out their welcome. You know "Yeah Yeah" from an iPod commercial; "My Girl" has a girl-group feel; "I Wanna Be Your Man" has a Buddy Holly vibe and deft barebones production. Moon looks like a fashion victim playing dress-up, but his music has smarts, and bite.

The music purrs and roars through delicate lows and fiery peaks and they smash them all to pieces with their indie-rock guitars. It's outlandish, euphoric and perhaps strangest of all, quite catchy.

“Cut Your Teeth” bounded onto the web like an eager devil-puppy with an impish glint in its eye and savage fangs gleaming. Adorned in newfangled bells and spangly whistles, it’s a lurch to the leftfield for La Grange, whose first foray – into folk-rock – fell by the wayside somewhat. Stuffed with neon bass and dayglo hooks, we see a kind of sprawling synthpop. It’s a subtle, rabble-rousing anthem, almost entirely devoid of light. It’s a shadowy beast; a dark anthem that sets the tone for the record.

Outfit formed in 2011 in their native Liverpool. The stellar five-piece includes Andrew Hunt and Tom Gorton on vocals and synth, guitarist Nicholas Hunt, bassist Chris Hutchinson, and drummer/producer David Berger. Slowness is their follow-up to 2013’s Performance, an arguably more pop-centered album. Slowness’ diversion from an easier feel-good sound is a mark of the band’s willingness to experiment. Even the album title signaled that the band was taking a subtler, gloomier approach to their second release. The album is intriguing and mysterious, which leaves a longer lasting affect on the listener.

It’s a highly atmospheric release, nonchalant and breezy in mood, yet clearly finely tuned in execution. Chris Ward, after a string of mostly unremarkable, derivative releases, seems to have finally come into his element, tossing together elements of funk, d&b, trip-hop and downtempo with a refreshing subtlety and chilled-out confidence that make each track a soothing earworm that never really feels the need to turn into anything groundbreaking.

The StepKids' sophomore album, Troubadour, is a kaleidoscope of stimulating sounds paired with lyrics that often feel too affected to be taken seriously. Part of the group's appeal is that they sound like musician friends gigging at a hipster lounge in their spare time, just for kicks. But the StepKids have a tendency to undermine emotion by crafting peculiar lyrics that weaken the song's message (i.e., "Symmetry"). They successfully channel Steely Dan eccentric-ness on "The Lottery" and "Moving Pictures," with both encapsulating the band's jazzy funkiness and pleasurable, back-in-the-day grooves. However, it's as if they're itching to reveal all their inspirations on this one album, whether it calls for them or not. "Bitter Bug" and "Insecure Troubadour" find them squeezing influences into Troubadour that make it swing wildly, like a kicked pendulum.

This debut effort from Marie Merlet and Matthieu Beck is like a long bath with a mug of herbal brew, a soothing and rejuvenating record that sounds a bit like Happy Meals in a woolly jumper while extolling the virtues of some quality solo time (Time to Get Alone) and a good night’s sleep (One Last Drink). The pair’s lullaby vocals and chirpy keyboard presets project a naive playfulness that belies understated and mature arrangements.

‘In A Poem Unlimited’ is not only the Illinois-born artist’s most accessible material to date, it’s also her greatest collection of songs by some margin and the best you’re likely to hear in 2018. Fuelled by political angst and social inequality, it feels like a landmark and although aided by a plethora of exceptional musicians, it’s difficult to envisage anyone else but Remy conceiving such a record. This is exemplary, political pop music executed to near perfection.

Produced by Andy Shernoff of the Dictators, The Roaring Third consolidates Griffin and Enkler’s decidedly diffuse approaches masterfully, with the former tangled up in the blues-punk strains of “Carthage Burns!” and “2 Sisters” and the latter wringing out rustic-sounding ballads, like “Always Almost There” and “Cigarette Day,” that could easily provide chart fodder for John Mellencamp if he ever gets around to doing that covers set.
