Carnation finds Gibson settling his delivery into a groove suggesting all manner of indie-minded crooners. You’ll now hear a lot in common with Matt Berninger of The National (“Heaven You Better Come In”), Mark Sandman of Morphine (“I Let Him Deal”), Chris Isaak (“Shatter You Through”), even hints of New Romantic balladeers from The Smiths and Spandau Ballet. This is both the album’s blessing and curse: Gibson weaves his breathy drawl and gravelly melodies in and out of this processed backwoods haze to the point where meaning becomes mumble. For an LP with instrumentation that so regularly sounds beautiful, it’s a little disappointing that Daughn Gibson’s identity is one constructed from obscurity. The devil on Carnation isn’t in the details, but in the lack thereof.

The titles of the album suit each other really well and seem to be telling a story about the feelings one has as they fall in love. The dreampop gives off spring and summer vibes to perfection. I can totally imagine myself sitting in the sun, with a cool drink, listening to this at full volume. That would be the perfect experience to listen to Cuushe in my opinion.

The beauty of History of a Feeling lies in how completely it lets you into Diaz’s life. She conceals no caustic thought or angry outburst, laying it all bare in complete pointed honesty. While the record undoubtedly could be a comfort and companion for fans, most of all it was made for Diaz herself. Fortunately, Diaz’s chronicle of healing also makes for her most powerful record, a potent work of cherished folk beauty and open-hearted songwriting.

This is her most defiantly disco record to date. Where ‘Overpowered’ or ‘Take Her Up To Monto’ might veer off on prog or avant garde jaunts, ‘Róisín Machine’ is lit exclusively by the glitterball. Ever since ‘Sing It Back’, it’s where she’s felt most at home. But this is Róisín’s idea of disco. Disco, for the most part, is fairly surface level. Good times, bright lights, sweaty bodies. If it makes you move, it’s a winner. If it makes you think too, to Róisín, that’s even better.

Absolute Zero is as accomplished as one could hope for a first big release. It establishes the band’s music as a concoction of the classic sounds of rock, folk, roots and Americana. Anyone who’s seen LGC live in the last few years will have experienced the depth of their powerful harmonies; which can really stun when they perform them in cascading fashion. There’s plenty of all-in harmonies on Absolute Zero, it’s the band’s most recognisable collective asset right now.

Despite the brief length of the album (31 minutes!), the project delves deep into hard-hitting issues like heartbreak, spirituality, and grabbing life by the horns and living it to the very fullest. Rock Candy is incredibly energetic and Orianthi deserves to be congratulated. And even if you don’t resonate with hard rock- there may still be something for you on this unique but resonating album. Well done Orianthi !

Even if you don’t remember the seventies, one associates a certain vibe with that decade, and a certain sound. It’s not the pop-rock of the sixties, or the synth-rock of the eighties, but a largely upbeat and relaxed country-rock that runs the gamut from too simple to too complex, as well as that sweet spot in between. Canada’s Zeus reach for that sweet seventies on Credo.

Doldrums have carved out their own section of the neo-futurist pavilion, combining instrumental improvisation (created entirely by a bare bones lineup of two guitarists and one drummer), spatial exploration, folkish strands and textural condensation. The debut EP drew comparisons to Main, Cul de Sac, Labradford, the Dead C., Cluster and Jessamine. With the new album, listeners ought to draw more appreciation for the considerable rhythmic maneuverability Doldrums bring to the table as well as the mathematical skills they can use when the mood fits them.

Their 2020 release, ‘Making a New World’, was a concept record, cleaning up the rubbish of the aftermath of a war – it was surprising to hear back from Field Music so soon, but ‘Flat White Moon’ is here, featuring standardised grooves that rarely experiment with rhythm, and no clear concept, but if you were to make one up, let’s say ‘Steely Dan’s trip to Canterbury turns out marginally baroque’.

On their debut record, 2013’s Howlin’, Jagwar Ma dedicated themselves to a hyper-pop sound built from nostalgic ‘90s Manchester club beats and melodic psychedelic pop songs. It was a decent enough record, but hasn’t really left an impression. So is their sophomore effort, Every Now & Then, an improvement on Howlin’? Not entirely. Jagwar Ma prove they can pull off the same tricks as their debut, which is why it also shares many of the same flaws.
